Pairing the LIGHTCON™
(Lightgun)
Find out how you and up to three friends can play MARS with this guide for pairing the LIGHTCON(S).
Yes, MARS will work on any type and size of TV, including projectors and most types of projector screens.
No, MARS only works with MARS compatible games on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Visit the GAMES section on mars.pdp.com to see the full list of compatible titles.
The MARS LIGHTCON is a wireless lightgun that uses a low power laser for pinpoint accuracy.
First, remove the battery door on the right side of the LIGHTCON and insert two AA batteries. Then, press and hold the button on the right side of the LIGHTCON to turn it on.

First, turn off the LIGHTCON by pressing and holding the power button on the right side of the lightgun. Next, hold down the trigger and the back button simultaneously, then press the power button on the right side of the lightgun (to turn the LIGHTCON back on). Follow this same process to unpair your LIGHTCON in order to re-pair it or pair it with a new MARS IR STATION™.

The MARS IR STATION is an IR filtered camera that detects the laser from the MARS LIGHTCON on any type of TV or projector. The USB cable included in the MARS Starter Kit connects to the IR STATION differently depending on the platform. For PlayStation, the USB cable is permanently attached to the IR STATION. For Xbox, the USB cable is removable.
A solid light means the IR STATION is on. When it’s blinking, it means it is ready to pair a LIGHTCON.
The IR STATION should point towards the TV screen.
Yes, you can use any USB port on the console. It’s recommended to use the front USB to get the most length out of the USB cable.
First, determine the size of your screen. Then, at a minimum set up the MARS IR STATION that same distance from the TV. (Example: If you have a 75” TV, the MARS IR Station needs to be at least 75” away).
No, the MARS IR STATION can be placed anywhere in front of the TV as long as it can see all four corners of it and is placed the proper distance, as suggested above. (On the floor or off to the side is okay).
The head of the IR STATION can tilt up and down, and you can rotate the entire body of the IR STATION.
A slight delay when adjusting the MARS IR STATION to line up on the screen is a normal part of the calibration process. When you try to re-position the IR STATION, it’s best to pause and allow a couple of seconds for the adjustment to show on the screen.
Try moving the MARS IR STATION further away from the TV or try moving the IR STATION to a different location.
Once the MARS IR STATION successfully calibrates upon startup, it will automatically detect any movement and pause your game to recalibrate if bumped or moved.
Pause your game, navigate to the Options Menu and then select Manually Recalibrate to begin the calibration process.
Try picking up the MARS IR STATION and quickly setting it back down. This will force the IR STATION to detect the movement and pause your game to recalibrate.
Try to reduce any extra light in the room. Turn off overhead lights and lamps and close any blinds or drapes from windows that might be causing a glare on the TV. Also try to reduce any movement that might be happening behind the TV. You can also try to move the IR STATION even further back from the TV.
Yes, you can use a USB extension cable or a powered USB hub to extend the length of the MARS IR STATION cable.
When successfully paired, the light on the side of the LIGHTCON will turn to a solid color (red, blue, green or yellow).
No, once a LIGHTCON is paired to the IR STATION it will not need to be paired again. If you want to use that LIGHTCON with a different IR STATION, however, you will need to reset the LIGHTCON by turning it off. Next, hold down the trigger and the back button simultaneously, then press the power button on the right side of the lightgun (to turn the LIGHTCON back on).
Your game is ready to pair with a LIGHTCON when the light on the back of the MARS IR STATION is blinking.
Press the button on the right side of the LIGHTCON to turn it off. Next, hold down the trigger and the back button simultaneously, then press the power button on the right side of the lightgun (to turn the LIGHTCON back on). This process will reset the LIGHTCON and initiate the pairing process.
This is usually due to glare on your screen. Try reducing the amount of light in the room by turning off lights and closing any window shades. Also try to remove any other IR light sources (Examples: Kinect Camera, HTC Vive Lightboxes, Wii Sensor Bar, Candles, etc.)
You’ll need to recalibrate your MARS IR STATION by either going to the Options Menu and selecting Manually Recalibrate, or quickly picking up and putting down the MARS IR STATION to trigger recalibration.

The MARS IR STATION will only pair in certain parts of the game.

  • For Voyage of the Dead™ and Qubit’s Quest™, go to the main menu.
  • For Big Buck Hunter: Arcade, press Y (for Xbox One) or triangle (for PlayStation 4) on the controller after calibration.
Some games don’t assign a color until gameplay starts, so all the LIGHTCONS may be the same color until then.
The laser in the LIGHTCON is a class 1 laser and is safe under all conditions of normal use.
  • Try eliminating all extra light in the room by turning off overhead lights, lamps, and closing window shades. Try to reduce the glare on the TV as much as possible.
  • Try moving the IR STATION even further back.
  • Try to get the IR STATION as high as the bottom of the screen and as close to the middle as you can.
